Concise Oxford Dictionary defines hobby as a free-time activity or occupation. So hobby is something done in the spare time just for the sake of fun or to pass time. Hobbies
There are many types of hobbies. Some are outdoor hobbies and some are indoor. Outdoor hobbies give us physical exercise. But indoor
give us no physical exercise. Like Photography, collecting coin-like things, pen friendship, reading and writing are such hobbies.
I have two hobbies: gardening and stamp collecting In summer and spring, I say my prayers on early Sunday mornings and go straight to my lawn. In winter, l start my work in the garden quite late. In the morning. Once I am among
plants, have no sense of time. I just remember William Wordsworth's saying: "Closer to Nature, closer to perfection." I have the tools of a gardener with me. Once a week I do all the work myself. When I touch the soft branches and leaves, I feel
overjoyed. My fingers. love this sweet sensation. The shoots, buds, and flowers reflect the work of Allah Almighty. He is surely the greatest artist in the universe. When I look closely at the process of growth and decay in Nature, my belief in Allah
becomes firm.
Hobbies are usually not rewarded, but I get my reward of gardening. This reward is of a different type. On the twenty-third of March, I hold a get-together of my friends on my lawn. This is
my birthday as well. Spring is in full bloom. In the afternoon, this beautiful lawn · and flowers of different colors look very attractive. When my friends admire my efforts, I feel that Nature
has given me my reward. My close friends wait for this day. They remember the colors and the scent of various flowers.
On numerous occasions, I have participated in the flower shows held in the city. My stalls have won prizes twice. This has taught me a lesson that love of Nature never goes unrewarded
Hobbies serve as a link between work and idleness. They save us from the dull routine of work and give us a thrill when we have actually nothing to do.
For Extraordinary Students
It is said that an empty mind is a devil's workshop.
The moment we sit idle, devil starts instilling evil in our minds. So it is always better to do something constructive in our spare time. Any thing that we do in our spare time is called our hobby. It may or may not help us earn money or
reputation. But it does give us pleasure, peace of mind and satisfaction.
People adopt different hobbies according to their age, taste and
temperament . Stamp or coin-collecting, gardening, cycling, music, movies and hiking are some hobbies that people usually adopt. All these have their own good or bad aspects. But I think that book reading is far better than all these hobbies as it prepares us for life. It covers all the aspects of man's life and
provides both knowledge and pleasure.
In this world of strife and struggle where every-body is hankering the after money, books are selfless friends. They never leave us in the lurch Nor do they reap advantages in our distress . They are helpers to the helpless and friends to the friendless. They are the source of wisdom and pleasure. They teach us how to face and overcome difficulties. They advise us to be sober and dignified both in distress and happiness.
One must be careful in selecting books. some books are more dangerous than scorpions and more poisonous than snakes. Such books pollute our minds and contaminate our souls. Bacon, the great essayist, says,
"Some books are to be tasted, others to be swallowed and some few to be chewed and digested."
It means that we should read only such books as illuminate our minds and purify our souls.
I have a small library in my house. I have collected a number of books on different topics: politics, religion, Urdu and English literature, science and
general knowledge. All these books have been bought with the pocket money that my parents give me every month. Instead of spending it on watching obscene Indian or English flims or eating spicy unhygienic food at different hotels, I buy books. I keep them neat and tidy and read them in my spare time, I also ask my friends to read these books. But I am sorry that some of them never return my books. They think that by digesting books Bacon means digesting (grabbing) other people's books.
