The rain is a short symbolic poem with a serious message. The poet W.H Davies explains a beautiful view of rain and sunshine with the help of words. He says that Rain is one of the most beautiful scenes of nature. It lends a greater charm to the scenes and highlights of nature. It provides huge pleasure while falling. The upper leaves of the tree receive plenty of rain and appear as if they are drinking rain to the fullest. While the lower leaves of the tree and dependent on the upper leaves of the tree. Upper leaves give their remains to them drop after drop. Falling rain creates music that is sweet to hear. The poet actually enjoys the music of rain and reveals in it. Poet symbolizes the top leaves with rich people who give coin after coin in the form of alms. He says that thin leaves are like poor people which are dependent on rich people. The falling drops producing a piece of mellow sweet music. After the rain sun shines brightly and lights every drop of water equally.

The poet means to say that in the world rich people enjoy every opportunity but the poor do not have access to it. He seems that in the future there will be equality. No matter rich or poor everyone will get their own share. Then word will represent a more beautiful view than ever.

The Rain Summary

(For Ordinary Students)

Nature and hardships of life are favourite themes of W. H. Davies. In this poem, he also expresses his views about rain and social discriminations found in our society. This poem has symbolic meanings. The poet says that he hears the leaves drinking rain. The leaves on top are full of water of rain. When the water of rain sprinkles on the leaves it creates nice music. The upper leaves after quenching their thirst pass on the drops to the lower leaves. This metaphor means that the rich get a golden chance first and whatever remains trickle down to the poor people. The poet says that, soon, it will stop raining. The sun will come out. Its beautiful light will brighten up each drop.
The sun will shine in full brightness. It will be a lovely sight. The poet means to say that there would be equality in the society just like the sunshine which spreads all over the world equally. This sunshine is both for the dark round drop of rain and rich green leaves.
